I woke up this morning and made my boys green pancakes. For lunch, we even had green mashed potatoes. Even as they are getting older, it is fun watching them expecting Mom to do something creative and fun to celebrate even the littlest of holidays.
I am learning to be frugal and I love it. I decided that I am not going to let this recession hurt us. It will teach us wonderful things. For instance, I went garden seed shopping and am now planning my own garden. I have been reading different websites about layouts and, of course, good soils, weed control and space issues. I keep thinking of the fun and not-so fun times ahead for the boys, and I am planting, weeding and harvesting our own vegetables and fruits. I have researched recipes to can my (hopefully) plentiful variety of vegetables. We have bought the supplies to make different fruity jams.
This will be good for us. We're eating healthy, getting exercise and learning a few things along the way.
I also went through my daily/weekly routines and cut back, along with laying some ground rules for everyone in my house to get used to, as well. For instance, I usually do my main grocery shopping once a week, generally Monday nights. Well, my husband and I were always in the habit of asking one another if we could stop at the store and pick this up (i.e., milk). After I started adding things up, we weren't stopping for that one item, we were usually picking up about $20 worth of items that we really didn't need. An extra $20 here and $20 there really adds up. So, now, I shop once a week. If we run out, we run out. The whole family is learning to eat what has been in our cupboards for a while. I think of it as cleaning out the pantry. I know saving $100 a month doesn't seem like much, but it all adds up.
Stay tuned to next week to learn about Bartering. It is so cool! Have a great week!
